WHAT IS A CAYRADE ?

mules carrying goods

 

In the old days, the routes muletières were ancient ways which were used to transport  goods (wine, silk, salt) from the south of France towards the mountainous region of Le Puy en Velay, by mules. Then muleteers went back south loaded with peas, beans, barley, lentils ... Le mule walking ahead used to be called "le viegi",  and around her neck, there was a cayrade : a bell to guide the others.
